Center for Data Analytics, Data Science, and Evaluation

Wilkin F. Simo, MIT

Center Director of Center for Data Analytics, Data Science, and Evaluation

ABOUT

The field of data science has emerged to tackle the challenge of extracting information from these data sets by combining aspects of statistics, machine learning, software engineering, and data visualization. Data science has been accompanied by a number of open movements aimed at maximizing scientific impact by increasing accessibility of science, promoting reproducibility and enabling future studies. These include the sharing of raw data sets, source code, publications (open access), and education. The life sciences community has long recognized the importance of data, and has recently reinforced its importance.

GOALS:

  1. Data acquisition (measurements, signals, images)
  2. Data processing (including design of algorithms and statistical models and large-scale computations)
  3. Results analysis (statistically well-founded conclusions)

ACTIVITIES:

  1. Guidance of Researchers
  2. Courses
  3. Data Analysis and Consultancy
  4. Workshops
  5. Research and Extension Collaboration

OTHER INFORMATION:

The Center will also be a window on the cutting-edge research in statistics and data science that will be performed at DOrSU, characterized by a unique integration of computation and domain knowledge to statistical questions. The ubiquity and rapid proliferation of data have created unprecedented challenges and opportunities in research for which statistics is a uniquely powerful tool from economics and anthropology to computer science and environmental engineering. The Data Science Center was formed as part of DOrSU Research and Extension Center to provide a shared space for these disciplines, shaping the practice of statistics in DOrSU and fostering multidisciplinary collaborations that examine some of the most complex societal challenges we face today.
